Typically, it amounts to several thousand hours or several years spent on the job prior to being eligible. You must check with your state’s Department of Regulatory Agencies to find out what your state requires for licensure.

  3. To become a union journeyman pipefitter that is a member of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, you must complete a 5 year apprenticeship with on-the-job training and classroom hours. Your general schedule would include you working by day and going to class by night.
  4. If you choose not to participate in a union apprenticeship, there are pipefitter apprenticeship programs commonly offered by local technical schools.
  5. A pipefitter must complete the American Society of Mechanical Engineers training to learn ASME codes to qualify as a journeyman. If you will complete a union apprenticeship, you will likely take the necessary courses to complete code training. If you choose to become a non-union pipefitter journeyman, then you will need to take code courses to fulfill this requirement.
  6. Some states also require journeyman pipefitters to complete an Occupational Safety and health Administration (OSHA) course. These can also be taken over the course of your apprenticeship.
